>>24507I only saw it first time out, 17 years ago, so I don’t remember every episode. I was in my 30s so definitely not my first boners lol. For me it was more the WTF factor that it existed, a “hot” actress who’d put on significant weight showing herself in those kinds of situations — overeating, talking about being fat, struggling to fit into clothes, having sex, being clumsy, getting stuck, working out in really tight workout gear, etc.
It wasn’t wall to wall FA stroke fodder at all, but there were some legit funny moments in between so it wasn’t a slog waiting for the next fatty bit. Some of the cameos by famous buddies like John Travolta were fun, and it was kind of a proto Curb Your Enthusiasm with the Hollywood setting and a mix of RL actors and situations and made up stuff. (Like Miriam Bialik playing herself as Alley’s neighbor, which was pretty random at the time, many years post Blossom and pre Big Bang.)
It definitely ran out of steam by the end of the season, both the jokes and the sexy factor. I think I checked out after an episode where she was trying to lose weight by having midgets around the house so she would “think small.” Yikes.
PS: This is a deep cut but Alley was on SNL in the early 90s, when Cheers ended. The episode was memorable for me because you could see she was just starting to chub out. (There were clues in the last couple seasons of Cheers where they dressed her in baggier clothes.) She was in a sketch goofing on then-ubiquitous diet expert Susan Powter. Not fat herself yet, there were actual fatties in the sketch and she was kinda curvy for 90s TV.
