I don’t know if this counts, it involves a story about how a company fattens up the world until the norm is to be obese. It also mainly focuses on one girl who goes from a thing/slightly chubby girl discovers the company and becomes city sized by the end of the story. But it talks a lot about how society slowly changes to accepting and encouraging weight gain.

Idea for a story:
In the far future, the world is a high tech, sci fi, hedonistic utopia populated almost completely by women. For centuries, everyone on earth has been dosed with nanites that keep them eternally young, fit and healthy, allowing them to gorge and drink and drug themselves to their hearts content without issue.Everyone has the looks of a cover girl and the physique of an olympic athlete and has never had to diet or exercise. Even the concept of doing so is baffling, when everyone can run 40 mph if they wanted and eat 20k calories a day without even getting a food baby, why would you? In fact, its expected to be a complete glutton...

Until the day a hacker fritzes the nanites. As the whole population suddenly deals with rapid weight gain and collapsing physical fitness, a frozen dude from the past is thawed out and teamed up with an increasingly plump female cop to find the hacker who caused this...

Of course, they should have checked to see if he was a chubby chaser first...

It's not that bad, you reassure yourself as you head out.

Sure you used to run to college every day and make it in five minutes. Now...now its about a thirty minute walk and if you try to run your knees scream and your heart thunders. But it's not so bad for you.

You're walking at least, unlike everyone else who's gotten so, so lazy. Its probably why you can still walk. The sight of your Mom, fitness fanatic and state beauty queen the year you were born heaving her gelatinous body onto a scooter is worrying but...that probably won't happen to you...right...

You waddle on, a little slower than the day before. When you first realized you were waddling you freaked, but by that point no one else cared. You were always far fitter and thinner than the norm, cross country champ and cheer captain in high school and hadn't planned on gaining a freshman fifteen at the town's college.

Instead you gained a hundred and fifty pounds and it wasn't yet November. Worse, it was about half to a quarter of what everyone else had gained.

It had started in June, noticing that the concession stand at the pool you life guarded at was doing good business. And that everyone, be they middle aged moms or recent graduates was showing a bit of extra weight.

You didn't think much about it...until you were fooling around with your quarter back boyfriend and noticed he had a beer gut coming in. Until you went shopping with your cheer team for bikinis for the float trip and they were all too chubby for the store, as was the clerk. Until you heard grunts upstairs and went up to find your attractive, fit reporter mom laying on her back trying and failing to zip her slacks up over a pot belly.

You really freaked out when you noticed in mid june that your life guard bikini was pinching and your daily mile time was rapidly increasing. Finding out you'd gained twenty pounds since graduation was bad...you resolved to diet and lose them all...

But then came the government emergency order. Words like outbreak, pandemic and quarantine were announced. Tanks on the exits to town, drones and helicopters filling the air, hazmat soldiers going door to door. Conspiracy theories abounded, rumors about crashed satellites or derailed toxic waste or bio weapons or even, ludicrously, some profaned statue at a museaum. Why no one knew, the CDC was still puzzled it was happening in your town and were making no progress, but at least it wasn't spreading. Four months later and you were all still quarantined...and it was getting bad inside.

The government was flying in food and supplies, although clothing was in tight demand given the growth rate. Most people were still working, although not doing a very good job. The biggest people, the ones who could barely stand up and needed wheel chairs to get around, they could only do the simplests computer tasks.

Everyone was getting lazier and lazier. You're the only one you know of still trying to exercise, everyone else just avoiding it. Your boyfriend gives the excuse of wanting to avoid injury, even though he needs your help to stand up anymore. At the start of summer he was ripped, now he's a blob with moobs bigger than his head and a cock hiding apron gut. At first he'd been devastated but as he got too fat to run or lift, he just gave in, now all he does is eat and play video games.

Thinking of it makes you hot and bothered. Just like your cheer co captain, a leggy red head who made you work for hottest girl in the school title. Now she's a freckled ball, wider than she is tall. Her knees and ankles swell when she stands up and her garbage bag size boobs keep her from standing up straight. She has to use a walker now and is on the waiting list for mobility scooters.

Your mom was the first to get one. The ex-model local news anchor inflated on camera, in June the camera always focused on her boobs, now she's too wide to fit in frame. She doesn't really report anymore, just eat on camera and the ratings have sky rocketed along with her weight.

You're huffing and puffing by the time you get in, the thought of their fat, unhealthy bodies making you desperately wet. Only to find that your professor has cancelled class. She was a leggy British professor of ancient anthropology and now it turns out she got stuck in her car and couldn't get out. You see panting fire fighters oh so slowly cutting her out of the car. It takes all of them to get her on a gurney and the ambulance barely makes it off, she's gotten so fat.

Left behind in the ruined car, a stone statue from the paleolithic. A bulbous female figure, with ancient runes on it. Papers in her abandoned brief case say it may be the origin of the curse and that with careful study it can be used to reverse it.

You pocket it in your hoody and waddle towards the local donut place. Along the way, you debate tossing it into the river. On the one hand, you're a lardass.

You've turned from leggy cheer captain to 275lb pear. Your cellulite coated legs clap and wobble, you don't have ankles anymore and need two cheer skirts to pin around your door jammer hips. A pregnant looking gut sags over your belt and your tits are barely D cups, your triple chin bigger than your boobs. You're pre diabetic and starting to binge eat like everyone else.

On the other, thinking of how fat everyone else is, of how your mom can't walk for her size and can barely talk due to how full her mouth is, of how your boyfriend's moobs are bigger than your head and thanks to the estrogen you've been giving him almost giving milk, of how your old co captain has invited you over for a pizza and beer night to watch some porn and see where things go...

You don't chuck the statue over the bridge...but you reserve the option. After all, you've got a while until you need a scooter....

Besides you could argue that it *does* make sense. In fact it might make more sense, Economic power is only held by the skinnies...the men. Male dominated economy was real (and still is). Imagine if Men purposely kept women fat and happy and docile. Pushed standards of softness to help keep woman controlled.


The world wars happened a lot differently, without widespread conscription men never left the factories and women never took up those jobs. Economic power stayed in the hands of men. Women never won the right to vote.


But their campaigning was enough to scare the Men in charge and they feared they might lose their status or power...after all, women make up 50% of the population...and they put into motion plans to slowly keep women docile and to stop them campaigning so hard.


It didn't start with fatness, it just started with public funds, pampering, subsidies, and a change in the way women were educated. public housing for unmarried women kept them poor but housed. foods like corn were subsidized and high fructose corn syrup was so cheap it ended up in everything. Unhealthy, fattening foods were cheap enough they were all women could afford on the modest living wage they were given. Everything was about keeping them just happy enough not to complain, even if they weren't successful or happy. The only way up in life was to marry, any idea of hard work or self improvement was lost. The only small modicum of satisfaction to wade off the boredom was eating or entertainment.


Being overweight wasn't exactly considered sexy or desirable, but it became the norm over time. And then being downright fat became the norm. And then Obesity. The more normal it became the bigger women got. And men liked how dependent and pliable their women became. They would also be given control over a womans basic living income fund the moment they became married making the women even more reliant.


The TV shows helping fatties became a way to dream of living a better life, many of them with different angles...some were about finding a partner like in the Bachelor, or some were more like wife-swap. Some were more charitable, winning over female audiences with dazzling displays in the hopes that they might one day get to have their dreams made true, too.

But all the shows were designed to keep women compliant and reliant on men, and keep them watching TV all day and to show an empowering idealistic vision of how great it was to be a woman in modern times, how women can still do all these fun things (even though most can't afford and even if they could they are too unfit) and how happy and grateful they should all be, but behind the scenes was very different.

Anyway i got a little carried away but it is plausible and could make for a good angle.

Vague sci fi idea:
*far future utopian society, post scarcity, very prosperous, very peaceful, almost all or all female etc.
*injected nanites keep everyone slim, fit, healthy and young no matter their age or activity level. Between this and genetic tinkering average woman looks like a 'modern' cover girl.
*downside of this is a very static lack of social mobility, you'll always have a job that pays enough for what would be a luxury 1st world apartment in 2022 standards, but you'll never get promoted because your boss is going to be 25 forever and healthy. Very little meaning in life, as experiences are static and repetitive.

Imagine a future society that figured out how to make fat, healthy. Like you can get fat, and there are no negative side effects from being obese.

It's been years since the scientist have discovered a way for us to be fat without the negative health effects. Society changed that day. First me and my bf agreed simultaneously that I should be the one to get fat. It's been my dream, and he's always wanted a "massive gf".
Meanwhile, my sis, who came out as being a lesbian, was going to be taking the same method I was. So was her gf.
There are a few men who want this method as well, but it is based on choice, on whether you want to get fat, or not. Some take it to help improve their health benefit, due to some being so overweight, that they can't exercise or because of other health problems.

Things have been well since then. I'm now 630 lbs, and I'm one of the few that actually walks. Most others use the hoverchairs, or the mobility pads (think motor scooters, but as one big platform). Some use belly wheels for those where their weight is too much. For me though, I have special clothes that pull my flab together while allowing it to strech in case we grow more.
My sister and her gf have been the happy blob couple down by the new food shop, where they serve all types of food. Those that have reached ton or above status are usually referred to as blobs or blob people. Most have various methods like robot extenders or "mind-clones" where replicas of the person in their thin form will go and do things that they think, like an extension of them.
Anyways, I've finished my mile-long jog and boy am I tired. If you saw me, you'd see this blob girl sweaty, red-faced, out of breath, and jiggling. Hadn't jogged like that since the "3k Jiggle Jog". A lot of people came to that one.
I waddle back home to see my now husband making me a feast for a queen. He's been happy with the new changes, and shows his affection every time, even if I've been jogging. "Morning hun, enjoy your jog?" he says, I nod, my jowls jiggling, as I immediately catch my breath. My stomach growls, and he comes up behind me, quickly setting the last plate on the table. "Sounds like someone is ready to eat." he says, grabbing my love handles and jiggling me. I try to push him off, but we're just playing, "C'mon, let me eat before you do that." I said.
After we load up our plates, with me getting the majority of it, we go down to the living room where we watch the news. There on our local news is Jessica Smith, the 850 lb Bombshell, still reporting the news, and one of the first anchorwomen to take the weight treatment. Her tan body and short hair work for her, along with the makeup, as she starts the story with the talk of the anniversary of the weight treatment.

These are the best years since we've discovered it.

I take your idea and expand upon it.

Imagine after solving the problem going on with the nanites and everything is solved, some members of society choose to remain overweight, obese, or blob-like. There could be a shift in society involving some of these behemoths that decide to become outright massive.
Perhaps the nanites help boost their strength and stamina, for those who want to be like 600 or 800 lbs and still be active. The programmer has the nanites injected into him so the terminal disease is conquered (although I assume that while he was being woken up, they already did that).
So now comes a future society that is now likes being huge, since the nanites keeps them from becoming unhealthy. Then some have, what is soon called, "Weight changers" (people who don't stick to just one weight, some days they're thin, some days they're obese, and some days, they just want to be immobile blobs sitting in one place, while their friends come over and use them as furniture as they play video game or something.)

I was thinking about writing a story about a society where the people grow fat and obese and society has to slowly adapt to the growing waistlines.

Does anyone have a good idea for the catalyst(s) that sets the weight gain off, because I don't want it to be generic story were society just accepts that this is just the standard now or a story wherein a corporation or a government uses a medicine that increases appetite or just fattens the people up since those have been overdone and I don't find them very interesting.

Think the Wildfire Virus in The Walking Dead. One day the world is getting fatter, and nobody knows why. People don't even notice it at first, that they're hungrier, that they aren't the only people gaining weight. Eventually, it's impossible to ignore. Data showing not a single person on Earth has lost weight for weeks, months. Scientists study it and come up flummoxed, in between fighting their new hunger cravings. Initially, doctors and governments try public health initiatives, but not only are people healthier than ever before, their metabolisms and bodies are actively working against them. People don't immediately accept it, and many struggle to come to terms with this change. Slowly, it becomes normal. People adapt.
